Mamma Mia at the Mandalay Bay

|
If you can remember dancing the night
away to bubblegum pop songs in platform heels, spandex, and enough
glitter to light up a room, you’ll love Mamma Mia!, a Broadway
confection that has enjoyed success on the stage since 1999 and is now
resurrected in all its glory to the delight of visitors to Las Vegas’
beautiful Mandalay Bay. With no violence, gratuitous sex, or
glorification of drugs, one might wonder how this play survived. In
reality, Mamma Mia! has achieved cult status without any of those
unsavory elements, and continues to get rave reviews.
What makes Mamma Mia! so special? |

Aside
from evoking memories of a sweeter, more innocent time, this unique
Broadway hit interweaves a soundtrack from Swedish pop band ABBA, who
had a string of hits in the 1970’s that still can be heard on radio
today. No less than 22 ABBA songs are tucked among the hysterics of
this foot-stomping, toe-tapping musical, which tells the story of 20
year old Sophie, about to be married and in search of a father she has
never known. Spying on her mother’s memories, she discovers there
could be more than one possible choice, so she invites all three men
to her wedding. Before the wedding takes place however, plenty of
chaos and comic relief ensues, as Sophie, her mother Donna, their
friends and the three potential Dads get together to discuss old
times.
Whether it’s the girls reminiscing about their younger
fantasies of fronting a pop band, complete with scenes involving pjs,
hair dryers, and ABBA hits you’ll love to sing along with, or the guys
tramping around the stage dressed in an array of snorkeling fins and
wet suits, Mamma Mia! is simply pure fun for those of us who remember
or those who wish they could have been there.
If you’re looking for a cheerful, forget-your-troubles production
about a time period many of us thought would never end, then dust off
your platforms, put on your old spandex, throw some glitter in your
hair, and buy your tickets and get on over to Las Vegas Mandalay Bay
Casino for a truly wonderful evening.
