If you closed your eyes and heard the Temptations' classic "My Girl" and then opened them to reveal a quartet of white Australian gentlemen singing the song tune for tune, would you believe it? Fortunately, over at the Venetian on the strip inside the Sands Showroom there's Smokey Robinson presents Human Nature: The Motown Show. A production that conjures up a time of finger snapping, heel stomping, romantic music that filled the airwaves of the 1960s and 70s.
The four Aussies, consisting of brothers Andrew and Mike Tierney, including Toby Allen, and Phil Burton, grew up on the vinyl rhythms of the classic hit makers coming out of Detroit. They started out as a doo-wop group known as The 4 Trax as street performers, and after a name change, they've been a top 40 single and album charter for the last two decades in their native homeland. They've toured as an opening act for musical icons Celine Dion and Michael Jackson. It wasn't until they released REACH OUT: THE MOTOWN RECORD, covering songs of their R&B heroes that they caught the eye of legendary singer Smokey Robinson. At an invite to a recording session, they sang an a cappella version of "Ooo Baby Baby" and he was impressed at that moment. Under his sponsorship he's taken the group out of the First State and brought them under the Vegas spotlight for all to believe.
Their vocal performances are in perfect harmony in emulating their idols that put Hitsville on the map from beloved sensations such as The Temptations, The Supremes, The Four Tops, Stevie Wonder, etc. Whether if it's a male or female voice they pull it off with such impressive delicacy and breathe energetic life into beloved motor city tracks such as "My Girl," "Get Ready," "ABC," "Dancin' in the Street," "Stop in the Name of Love," "Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch," "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," to name a few. They offer a lighthearted tone to their set using the stage screens to display stock footage and photographs of their early years. There's even a brief history lesson showcasing the illustrious past of this great music scene. Including a personal statement of approval from Smokey himself.
This is a concert where they ask the audience members to dance to the music and sing along to the lyrics as if it were American Bandstand. With tickets at $41.50, this is an upbeat thrill ride for young, middle aged, and old to equally enjoy. If you love Motown hits, it'll increase it; if you don't know the songs, it'll make a fan out of you, and when the show is done it'll have you be dancing in the street.
