Las Vegas is a hot destination for shows and concerts. Unfortunately, all residencies and entertainment events remain on hold as Nevada slowly returns to business-as-usual following the coronavirus outbreak. In late September, the governor approved private gatherings of up to 250 people with exemptions that could allow attendance of 10 percent capacity in large venues. That means we could soon see the return of advertised live performances and trade shows. UNLV is already inviting fans to Rebels games at Allegiant Stadium. Don’t be surprised to see comedy clubs take the lead with socially distanced seating in place. If you see tickets on sale for any events in the near future, be flexible with your plans and consider those dates tentative. Refunds will be issued for any officially cancelled performances. When Vegas fully returns to its old self, you’ll be able to count Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, Cher, Aerosmith, Shania Twain, Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey and Rod Stewart as top resident headliners. Sting, Keith Urban and Kelly Clarkson were expected to debut new Vegas residencies in 2020, but those are likely delayed until 2021.

When will Cirque du Soleil Return to Las Vegas?

Beatles Love

Nevada recently opened the door for entertainment venues to accept ticket holders at 10 percent capacity, but that doesn’t mean we’ll see the return of Cirque du Soleil anytime soon. The Canadian production company filed for bankruptcy earlier this year, laying off 3,500 employees after suspending shows in March, including six Vegas residencies. The move was a way to cope with heavy debt before restructuring operations with new investors. So while Cirque will likely relaunch at some point, the shows are expensive to produce and 10-percent capacity probably isn’t enough incentive. It would take significantly larger audiences for Cirque to rebuild staff and relaunch its Strip productions — all of which have custom-built theaters in large casino resorts. Whether all six shows return isn’t known at this time. But long-time money generators like O, The Beatles LOVE, and Michael Jackson ONE seem like sure bets as long as the safety of staff and ticket holders can be secured. Money loser R.U.N. was already cancelled before the coronavirus crisis escalated. Regardless, it’s clear Cirque executives plan to move forward eventually and when they do, Las Vegas will be a major part of the operation.
